Children Tried as Adults Essay -- Juveniles Tried in Adult Criminal Cou

It is unfair for Ameri posterior children to know that though they can be innocent, they are treated as adults when they turn thirteen in some states. Although children have to learn the difference between what is right and wrong in their first-year years of life, most of them do not have enough experience to show that they are capable of living within society independently. Nonetheless, when they commit a serious crime-accidentally or purposely, the state mandate allows the judicatures to try them as an adult. There is a flaw here because they do not have a objurgate personality, nor they can readily understand how humans abide by the law, nor do they have the cognitive ability to understand how to live in society. This paper pass on argue that the idea of trying children for their crimes in the United States as an adult is too extreme. In the United States, when one turns eighteen, people consider that the individual is an adult, but there is no written national law, nor a stat ement in the United Nations covenants that I know of that states that a person is an adult at that age. old age eighteen is accepted as a norm because the Constitution states that under the 26th Amendment, people can vote. Additionally, though it up to the states to finalize, eighteen is when people can get a drivers license and buy cigarettes.Controversially however, there are no state laws or federal laws set to decide at what age a person is eligible to go to an adult court or prison if proven guilty for an unpardonable crime. An example of this is in Alabama, where two males at age fourteen are currently spending life in prison for a murder, but to the non-profit group, the Equal Justice hatchway of Alabama it is cruel and unusual punishment and violates their human right... ...in juvenile cases Mitigating and extralegal factors matter. Personal Narrative- Random Story About my Life :: Personal Narrative, Autobiographical Essay

Personal Narrative- Random Story About my Life One of them was that I was on my trip with some nonpareil. I was on the journey with my boyfriend Dusty whom I have been with for four years. I am more like myself when I am with someone, especially Dusty, than when I am by myself. I do think that spending time with just yourself is a waste of time. You should just be out talk to people because who go to sleeps when that dreaded day of death go out come. I think that you should just seize the moment and spend time with people. When I am by myself, I am mollify and withdrawn, but when I am with people, I talk up a storm and have a fun time just being me. I dont hold things back or try to act like someone Im non. Another similarity was when I was talking about the rocks. This is what I said. Oh my gosh, we just ran into a huge weaken filled with rocks. There are rocks everywhere. It is like a rock country. I can not believe it. There are small rocks, big rocks, pretty rocks, ugly ro cks, thin rocks, and fat rocks. It is so amazing. There are rocks on top of the cave that are starting to bother me, they are very big, and they do not look too steady up there. I do not know about those. I tell Dusty and Duke to get away from there because I dont compliments them to get hurt if the rocks were to fall. Duke does not want to listen he tries to climb up the side of the cave to get a better look at the rocks on top. As he goes up, one of the rocks he is on begins to fall. Duke falls with it and he is not moving. Dusty goes over and shakes him and thank god he is alright. I think that this describes exactly how I traverse with problems and how I see problems in my life. I always see them as these amazing ordeals and they often scare me. Then something will happen and I will think that it is going to be the end of the world, and then everything turns out to be just fine in the end. The last thing was when we were all in the tend and this was describing my childhood.

Pride and Prejudice :: Pride Prejudice Essays

Pride and Prejudice                      In fact, Pride and Prejudice was originally entitled First Impressions. However, the novel is not only about outgrowth impressions. Although we asshole find the first impressions about the characters through the first few chapters, this book returns us the effects of those impressions on the individual characters--prejudices of the characters. The story almost evenly describes the defects of Fitzwilliam Darcy who show pride at the beginning of the novel he speaks carelessly and insultingly to Elizabeth Bennet, and George Wickham who deceives others on purpose and conceals his truthless character. Elizabeth misunderstood both of them at first because of her prejudice.                       At first I have assumed that the title of this novel alludes cl archeozoic to Darcys p ride and Elizabeths prejudice. I also thought that the novel tells how Darcy and Elizabath overcome their pride and prejudice. However, I straighten out that this over simplifies the authors purpose. We can certainly see that Elizabeth has pride as much as Darcy has. She is proud of her intelligence, comprehension and independence. Actually, Darcys pride disappears quite a bit early in this novel. By chapter 6, he is starting to change his attitudes towards her. He is humbling himself to be close to her.  This shows   Darcys change But no sooner had he do it to clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark midpoint (16 page) He began to wish to know more of her, and as a step towards conversing with her himself, attended to her conversation with others.  From this point, Darcys prejudice against Elizabeth begins to fade w hile her prejudice towards him still stiff because he refused to dance with her at the ball. Her prejudice spreads throughout the book, and that prejudice is an outcome of her wounded pride.                      The main subject of this novel is courtship and marriage. Jane Austen, the author of Pride and Prejudice, shows and indirectly criticizes the 18th century Englands rural society and the pride of high class through several peoples marriages who are in different social position.

The Pathetic Jay Gatsby of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby Essay examples

The Pathetic Jay Gatsby of The Great Gatsby Pathetic is a term used to describe someone who is pitifully unsuccessful. Success is not necessarily measured in wealth or fame, but it is measured by how much one has accomplished in smell. A successful person is one who has set galore(postnominal) goals for himself and then goes out in life and accomplishes some of them, but goes on living even if failing on others. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a pathetic character because he wasted his integral life chasing an unrealistic dream. Gatsbys dream is unrealistic because it depends for its success upon Daisys discontent with her marriage and her willingness to exchange it for a life of love. But Daisys discontent, like her sophistication, is a pose.(Aldridge 36) The fact is, Daisy has almost all of the things that a woman could want out of a marriage. She is very wealthy, she has a beautiful daughter, and her affinity with her husband is of a comfortable nat ure. It is true that her life is not very exciting, but it is unreasonable to think that she would trade all that she had in her marriage to turkey cock Buchanan for Jay Gatsby. At that time, divorce was very uncommon, and it was very unlikely that any woman would leave her husband for any reason at all. Everything that Gatsby ever did in his whole life was based upon his pursuit of the dream. He moved to New York and bought his very expensive mansion because of Daisy. Jordan Baker said, Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just crossways the bay.(Fitzgerald 83) He held many expensive parties in the hope that Daisy mi... ...ing as a flawless plan. A successful person would achieve their goals by meeting their call for in life by using what was given to them. Gatsby tried to do the opposite, and failed. Gatsbys story it is a story of failure - the prolongation of the adolescent incapacity to tick off between dream and reality, between the terms demanded of life and the terms offered.(Troy 21-22) Works Cited Fitzgerald, F. Inflation & The rise of cost Essay

Inflation can be defined as the rise of be of goods and services in a country and therefore the cost of living. Inflation can be measured when the cost of a product/service increases over a period of time and therefore reducings the value of money in an economy. Inflation is bad for the economy because of many reasons. One of the reasons is because inflation can decrease the value of money over time and therefore decrease the purchasing power for common people. Apart from that, it tends to create a lot of uncertainty in the economy for producers and buyers. When there is uncertainty in the economy, this leads to a lower take of investment as people be not confident enough to invest, and as a result this leads to a lower economic growth. Inflation also tends to discourage entrepreneurs to expand their businesses or to start a new business because of the high school cost of goods and services. This therefore reduces competitiveness in the market which also affects international tr ades. When there are fewer businesses expanding or opening up, employment rate reduces which increases the level of unemployment rate. When unemployment rates are high, the crime rates increases as people find ways to survive and this affects the safety of the society. On the other hand, a lot of resources are wasted during inflation. For example, during the inflation period, people tend to save their money and spend less therefore companies hand over a lower demand rate and have a high wastage on raw materials that were purchased earlier. High inflation rates also make the economy unsustainable as its not strong. Source from the US Inflation Calculator, 2009.The graph above shows the inflation rates from the stratum 2000-2009 in the US. Not for Profit

Erin Powell Dr. Donald Roy PS 101 September 29, 2012 Martha Nussbaum Not for Profit Why Democracy Needs the Humanities Martha C. Nussbaum is the germ of the book, Not For Profit Why Democracy Needs the Humanities. The book get goings by drawing the readers attention by explaining the Silent Crisis. She describes reading in the eyes of the government, and in the eyes of the the great unwashed. at that place is a connection made between education and the liberal humanities. The title of the book, Not For Profit, ar three innocent words that when put together, beat a deep meaning. In this case, Nussbaum is using the phrase to relate to education. The government sees education as a way to further our sparing situation. Statistics say that a student that attends college leave behind relieve oneself a great deal more than a student that has not attended college. When people earn more money, they usually spend more money. This stimulates our economy, and is the goal of the gover nment. Government aims to use education as a tool to better our economy, yet they continually fall the meter of money they give to public schools each year. They take out the true classes that give a person their true identity. It searchs as if people are slowly becoming uniform, in being that liberal arts are being taken away, and students are left to studying simply the core classes of what they mention education. Martha is trying to explain that our education is not for profit Education is supposed to let people explore different skills and talents. There is a going away between education for profit, and education for citizenship. Education is intended to enhance the lives of the students which receive it. Nussbaum 9). Martha quoted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, which said Education shall be directed to the salutary development of the human personality and to the strengthening of the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote spi rit, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups. I couldnt agree more with this quote. This should be the true meaning and importance of education, not for the greediness of the government to use it for profit. Democracy truly needs the humanities.Liberal arts supplement education in making it better-rounded. Without the arts and humanities, we be interject the governments puppets, only being used to increase the economy. Liberal arts take been a part of education for quite some time. However, they do never truly been an weighty part of education according to government standards. What are beta to them are the four core subjects math, science, social studies, and language arts. Martha Nussbaum seems to disagree. To her, the liberal arts are the parts of education that charter each student an individual. It gives them their creativity, and it teaches their brains to think critically and analytically, rather than being confined to a box dictated by the core subjects. These ways of thinking are very valuable. They set apart each person, giving them their true identity. Liberal arts teach people to think for themselves. Without them people result rely on the government to do the thinking, and the government pull up stakes no longer truly represent its people. The Socratic Way defines the way in which students think and argue for themselves, rather than defer to tradition and authority, and is valuable for democracy. (Nussbaum 48). In terms of education this is important be motion thinking for oneself leads to critical thinking. Critical thinking causes students to also think analytically therefore they get a better understanding of their material. Democracy is rule of the people. If the people bay windownot think and argue for themselves, then how can they rule their country? It would be difficult to choose representatives if the people could not make their own decisions. Also in the business world as well, it would be difficult to get anything accomplished.Tradition and authority fork out been important in history. However, Nussbaum does not seem to agree with them. When every(prenominal)thing just goes by tradition, nothing is being changed. Things just happen the way they have always happened. Authority tends to stay similar as well. This is because people just go with the flow. They tend to not think for themselves, but instead make decisions based on tradition. Martha Nussbaum is a liberal when things need to be changed, they should be changed, and I completely agree. We cannot live according to tradition, because there might be a critical thinker or two in this world whom can discover a better or more efficient way to do things. If we are to improve at all in our lifetimes, living by tradition is not going to accomplish the goal. In this world there are Americans, Europeans, Australians, Mexicans, etc. However divided, we still affect each other. We borrow, buy, and sell from other countries, as wel l as become allies or enemies. Martha describes a world citizen in her book. This means that despite our geographical and cultural differences, we should put these parenthesis to work together. The worlds schools, colleges, and universities therefore have the important and urgent task to cultivate in students the ability to see themselves as members of a inhomogeneous nation, and a still more heterogeneous world, and to understand something of the history and character of the diverse groups that inhabit it. (Nussbaum 80. ) The idea of becoming a world citizen is wildly idealistic. There are so many people in this world that just cannot accept others.Power is a huge part of it, being that people want to be in charge. Some dont want to be considered equal they commit that some people are superior to others. It would take a humungous amount of effort to convince everyone on the planet to become a world citizen. Play is important in the lives of all people, but especially children a s they begin to develop. Nussbaum talks about sportswoman in Chapter 6. It is essential to play in aim to understand the value and worth of other people. Childrens stories and nursery rhymes cause children to put themselves in the shoes of another person. Therefore they learn that other human beings have feelings also, which helps children with a healthy development. Its this healthy development in which play causes that Nussbaum believes is so important. As children grow into adults, however, they dont necessarily play. They have left behind the world of childrens games. (Nussbaum 101). Therefore the arts become important. Whether its music, singing, painting, photography, etc. , the arts put people, fictionally, into the shoes of others. In doing this, people continue to grow in their concern for other human beings. As Martha describes our current situation, democratic education is truly on the ropes. Chapter seven talks about why this is true. Our economy is not doing so well. Every day our country goes further and further in debt. Apparently to our government, education is not very important, so they continue to make cut after cut of school funding. When the schools receive less money they have to make cuts on their spending. The humanities are always first to be reduced or eliminated. But when humanities, an important factor of a democratic education, are taken away we are certainly on the ropesWithout the humanities, schools cannot fully give students a democratic education. So what can we do about it? Nussbaum mentioned the alumni of schools. She claimed that some of them will send money or grants to their previous schools to help fund the humanities and liberal arts which they enjoyed having while they were in school. However, this cannot fund all parts of every program. Even in the core-subject classroom, we can encourage critical thinking. However, class sizes would have to be downsized. Schools would have to hire more teachers. Finances would obv iously have to come from somewhere. But in decreasing the amount of students in each classroom, it is easier for the teacher to focus on their students rather than primarily on the material. Smaller groups of students also make it easier to have classroom discussions where all students can participate and think outside the box. Humanities and liberal arts are clearly important to Martha Nussbaum. They should be important to everyone, and I wish they were. This world would be a better place if education was taught around the arts, rather than the arts simply being an elective, or being eliminated payable to funding cuts.I enjoy being able to think for myself and Im sure all people do. Our government is not perfect, and there never will be a perfect government. We cant rely on tradition to continue governing this country we have to make changes in order for the government to best represent the people and to make good decisions. Neither can we submit to the authority, just because its there. If we dont agree with something we have to have the audacity to stand up for what we believe in and never give up. Profits shouldnt be the main influence for education, nor should it control how we break our future generations.Instead we should focus on developing people as individuals, rather than people as money-makers. We all have feelings, and everyone deep down wants to feel important and competent. Simply ignoring our feelings is not an option. Drew Faust says it best, Human beings need meaning, understanding, and perspective as well as jobs. The question should not be whether we can afford to believe in such purposes in these times, but whether we can afford not to. (Nussbaum 124). Mistakes are made when we question whether or not to keep humanities in education. Its obvious that democratic education needs the humanities.
